Today I had the absolute pleasure of visiting the incredible Eco Committee at Oak Cottage Primary School.
This student-led group, made up of pupils from Years 3 to 6, meets weekly and has already achieved every one of their ambitious goals since launching just last year.
From growing their own crops for school meals to running litter picks and feeding local birds, their energy and commitment are second to none.
They’ve:
Passed a Severn Trent audit and installed solar panels—becoming the first school in the region to do so!
Launched book swaps, school-wide recycling, and ditched single use plastics from school lunches.
Celebrated World Environment Day with a unique class swap, painted nature themed rocks, and even made their own nature documentaries
Collected 240kg of unwanted clothes for reuse
Started tracking and reducing lunch waste down from 10kg to 8kg and composting the rest
Been using night vision cameras to track badgers, squirrels, and foxes around the school grounds
Become so dedicated they even remind teachers to switch off lights and computers!
Even local businesses like Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Haribo have been inspired, saying they want to do even more after seeing what these young leaders are achieving
Huge congratulations to every pupil involved, and to the staff supporting them, you are setting a powerful example for us all.
