Today, I have written to the Minister of State for Health and Social Care, to ask for an update on the Government’s promised action plan to improve speech and language therapy support.
Nearly 1 in 5 people will experience communication difficulties at some point in their lives, and around 2 million children in the UK are affected by speech and language issues. We know that when young people struggle to communicate, it can also impact their mental health later in life, which is why early and effective support is so important.
I am proud to work alongside footballing legend Chris Kamara and Mikey Akers. I was incredibly inspired by Mikey’s openness, positivity, and tireless campaigning to raise awareness of speech, language and communication needs and his desire to raise awareness of verbal dyspraxia.
Mikey has become a leading voice for change, including leading a petition calling on the Government to increase investment in speech and language therapy, which received over 10,000 signatures in just 16 days.
In March, Mikey, Chris, other campaigners and I met with the Minister to discuss what more can be done to improve access to these vital services. It was a constructive meeting, and the Minister assured us that an action plan would be developed. However, we’re still waiting to hear more details about when this plan will be published and what steps will be taken to ensure better support for those who need it.
I’ve now written to the Minister asking for an update because everyone deserves the chance to communicate, be understood, and reach their full potential.
Speech and Language Therapy Matters.
