Today in Education Questions, I challenged the Government over its decision to cut PE and sport funding for schools by 22%.
At a time when the nation is gripped by the excitement of the World Cup and millions of children are taking part in sports days across the country, this is exactly the wrong message to send.
Physical activity plays a vital role in children's health, wellbeing, confidence and educational attainment. Yet the Government has chosen to push through a significant reduction in funding, with the biggest impact falling on the most disadvantaged pupils.
For many children, especially those from lower-income families, school sport provides opportunities they may not otherwise have access to. Whether it's learning to swim, joining a football team, or simply developing a lifelong love of exercise, these experiences matter.
Every child deserves the opportunity to be active, healthy and thrive. The Government should reverse this cut and ensure schools have the resources they need to deliver high-quality PE and sport for all.
