Today, I spoke in the Debate on the Conservatives’ proposal to cut Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) a move that could make a real difference to families and first-time buyers across the country.
Buying my home was an huge source of pride for me but far too many across this country struggle to do the same and that’s why I’m extremely proud the Conservative Party is proposing we abolish Stamp Duty.
For too long, Stamp Duty has acted as a barrier to homeownership, trapping people in properties that no longer suit their needs and pricing out young people trying to take their first step on the ladder.
Lowering SDLT isn’t just a minor adjustment it’s a game changer for hardworking families. By reducing this tax burden, we can help unlock more homes on the market, encourage mobility, and boost construction and renovation, creating jobs and stimulating local economies.
When people can move more freely, the entire housing market becomes more dynamic from builders and tradespeople to local businesses that benefit from every move and every sale.
Crucially, cutting Stamp Duty means putting more money back into people’s pockets, rather than tying it up in government coffers.
