Today in Parliament, I pressed the Minister on their broken promises to expand apprenticeship opportunities, promises that young people and employers across Meriden and Solihull East were counting on.
The Minister tried to dodge and distract but thanks to the intervention of the Speaker he was forced back to the topic at hand. I’m not sure I agreed with how the Minister got there, but it now seems he agrees with the Conservative’s policy.
Even more concerning is their decision to gut Level 7 apprenticeships. These are high-quality pathways that allow people to train in professions like engineering, accountancy, and healthcare without taking on huge debt.
Scrapping or scaling these back doesn’t “rebalance the system” it shuts doors on aspiration and undermines the very skills our economy needs.
At a time when businesses are crying out for skilled workers, this Government is moving backwards. Fewer apprenticeships, fewer chances, and no clear plan.
Our young people deserve better.
